### Summary
The Telephone Operator serves as the Medical Center's receptionist providing information, and assistance. The Telephone Operator must direct calls to the proper service. Position is that of Electronic Private Automatic Branch Exchange Switchboard Operator in a general medical and surgical medical center.

### Responsibilities
The incumbent will process incoming and outgoing calls, i.e., international, toll, local, collect, calling cards, patient's long distance outgoing calls and conference calls promptly and accurately while giving good customer service. Maintains the operation of the Public Address System, Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD), Emergency Command Control Radio Network (ECCRN), and the Paging System. Monitors Code Blue, Code Reds. Blood Bank, panic, intrusion, fire, and telephone system alarms; implementing emergency procedures for any disaster as required. Exchange defective radio pagers, replace batteries and program exchanged pagers correctly. Maintain and assist the VA Police in the operation of the two-way radio system. Reports the need for repair of the operator's two-way system. Trains new telephone operators in the operation of the switchboard console, the info text directory, Zetron paging terminal and modem, Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD), Emergency Command Control Radio Network, fire alarm, and all associated procedures, duties, and responsibilities. These include writing, transmitting, receiving, and forwarding electronic mail (e-mail) editing, formatting work processing and spreadsheet documents. Operators type in data and other assignments into VISTA.

**Physical Requirements:**The work is usually sedentary but does involve some typing, does require sitting for long periods of time, being able to reach across a desk and handle several calls at one time.

**Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave**: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
