Background:
KIND was founded by the Microsoft Corporation and UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie, and is the leading national organization that works to ensure that no refugee or unaccompanied immigrant child faces immigration court alone. We do this in partnership with over 531 law firms, corporate legal departments, law schools, and bar associations has served more than 16,386 children since 2009, and trained over 26,018 private sector attorneys to provide them with high quality representation in their deportation proceedings. KIND also has Social Services Coordinators who work with the children throughout the length of their cases to ensure that they are connected to important resources and services in their communities such as mental health services, education, food, clothing, etc.. Additionally, KIND promotes the protection of children in countries of origin and transit countries and works to address the root causes of child migration from Central America. KIND also advocates to change law, policy, and practices to improve the protection of unaccompanied children in the United States, by educating policymakers, the media, and the broader public about the violence that is driving children out of Central America and their need for protection.
About the position: KIND's Fresno field office is looking for a Social Services intern for Fall 2018 to assist the Social Services Coordinator in identifying and connecting with resources in the Central Valley of California to support KIND clients. The position will be unpaid, but we are happy to assist you with externship credit, work-study, or securing funding from external sources. We have an intern laptop to use while working with us.
Qualifications:
Interested applicants must be:
+ Currently enrolled in an accredited College or University
+ Fluent in Spanish & English
+ Strong communication skills
+ Experience working with immigrant families and children preferred
+ Experience working with children and survivors of trauma preferred
+ Passionate about issues affecting unaccompanied immigrant children
+ Ability to commit to twelve weeks of interning preferred; minimum commitment of ten weeks required.
Duties: Social Services interns will assist us in the following:
+ Researching Social Services Resources: Outreach to agencies to inquire about services and referral processes.
+ Updating and Creating Databases and Resource Lists: Inputting information into databases and creating resource lists for different communities in the Central Valley.
+ Event Planning/Organizing: Making calls, sending invitations, and reaching out to agencies for participation or donations.
+ Client Support: Working directly with KIND clients to provide social services referrals.
