The laboratory of Joshua I. Goldhaber, M.D., Director of Basic Research Programs in the Smidt Heart Institute and Director of the Division of Applied Cell Biology and Physiology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA is recruiting Postdoctoral Researchers. The Goldhaber lab studies the role of intracellular calcium cycling in cardiac pacemaking and excitation-contraction coupling in health and disease models, with a particular focus on the sodium-calcium exchanger and heart failure. The lab employs a variety of techniques including single cell patch clamp electrophysiology, high resolution voltage and calcium mapping, fluorescence photometry, laser scanning confocal microscopy, cardiac cell isolation, and various molecular techniques including transcriptomics and proteomics. The vibrant basic and translational research program in the Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai, in addition to our existing relationships with UCLA, provides excellent opportunities for career development in cardiac research and mentoring for post-doctoral researchers.
Our studies require isolation of cardiomyocytes (ventricular, atrial, or sinoatrial node cells) or whole sinus node and atrial tissue sheets from either mice, rats or rabbits, patch clamping technique to study various ion currents, extensive use of a state of the art laser scanning confocal microscope to study subcellular calcium and other ion characteristics in live myocytes, immunostaining in fixed tissue, qPCR, western blotting, analysis and interpretation of data, preparing manuscripts and posters, presenting slide presentations at national meetings, and applying for fellowships and grants.
Job Summary:
Working independently but in close cooperation and in consultation with the Principal Investigator and other Research Scientist, the Research Fellow will perform routine and complex laboratory procedures throughout training period. You may develop, adapt, and implement new research techniques and protocols. Will analyze and interpret data and may assist in preparation of grant proposals. Will participate in publications and presentations as author or co-author. You will not be responsible for generating grant funds.
Essential job duties and responsibilities:
+ Designs and performs experiments. Will keep appropriate experimental records and documentation and analyze the results with the Principal Investigator.
+ May develop, adapt, and implement new research techniques and protocols.
+ Analyzes, interprets, summarizes and compiles data.
+ Performs routine and complex laboratory procedures throughout training period.
+ Operates and maintains equipment and instruments.
Educational Requirements:
+ M.D. or Ph.D. in biophysics, biochemistry, physiology, molecular biology, or related field is required
+ Hands-on experience with voltage/calcium imaging or patch clamping in cardiac cells
+ Additional experience in molecular biology, cell culture techniques and animal handling is strongly preferred
Experience required:
+ Must possess excellent good command of English language (written and spoken) and will be expected to write applications for extramural funding.
+ Applicants should have strong organizational skills and interact/collaborate well with other lab members.
+ Works independently on research projects designed by a mentor (typically the PI) within area of specialization.
+ Acquires thorough technical and theoretical knowledge of research project and objectives during one to five (1-5) year post-doctoral appointment.
+ Demonstrated aptitude to perform experimental protocols and procedures, including detailed data collection, and analysis and operation and maintenance of specialized equipment.
+ Knowledge of safety standards and maintenance of specialized equipment.
+ Prior experience in basic cardiovascular laboratory research.
+ Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, GraphPad Prism and other Windows-based software.
+ Experience in grant proposal development and grant submission in basic research.
+ Ability to work independently.
+ Good written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
