Surgical Technician I - Surgery - St. Joseph Health / Covenant Health (California)
We are looking for a Surgical Tech Iwith the Surgery Department at St. Mary Medical Center.
Schedule: Full Time - 80 biweekly hours
Shift: 8-hour, Evenings
Job Summary:
Under the guidance and supervision of a registered nurse, is responsible for surgical case preparation including allocation of appropriate surgical supplies and instrumentation and intraoperative organization of the sterile field. Facilitates the surgeons needs by passing the appropriate sutures and instrumentation. Assists with the terminal cleaning of the surgical suite/instrumentation after the procedure has ended. In addition, this position encompasses advanced skills through advanced training and knowledge to actively participate in optimal patient care and improved perioperative performance.
Age-Related Competencies: Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and possesses the ability to respond to specific issues and data reflective of patient's status. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide for the primary population of patients served in the department.
Ages of Patients Served: Infant (28 days–1 year), Child (1-12 years), Adolescent (13-18 years), Adult (18-64 years), Geriatrics (65 years–death).
Essential Functions:
+ Prepares surgical suite for specific cases.
+ Monitors environmental conditions relating to type of procedure, duration and age of patient.
+ Monitors aseptic technique and proper sterilization requirements.
+ Integrates type of procedure, physician's preference and age of patient to pick supplies and instrumentation for the surgical procedure.
+ Implements practices for prevention of infection.
+ Functions in the scrubbed role for all General Surgical Specialties; able to proficiently scrub three to four service lines after one year of acceptance to the Surgical Tech I position.
+ Provides for patient and staff safety according to surgical policies and procedures.
+ Demonstrates ability to carry out all assignments and procedures according to policy and procedure manual/AORN standards of practice.
+ Collaborates with other disciplines to revise the patient care plan according to the changing needs of the patient/surgeon.
+ Contributes to the efficient and smooth functioning of the department including at least 3 audits per month.
+ Attends ongoing education specifically related to the needs of the surgical technician to maintain competency a minimum of three educational classes per year.
+ Develops educational programs to upgrade clinical competencies. Conducts two programs per year to validate competencies.
+ Assists in the development of policies and procedures relating to scrub role/new technology.
+ Assists in the upkeep of Physician Preference Cards and Supply Inventories.
+ Actively participates in Continuous Improvement and Team STEPPS.
Skills:
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills.
+ Thorough knowledge of the nursing process as it pertains to the ORT role.
+ Demonstrate ability to provide quality patient care as it pertains to the ORT role.
+ Capable of performing in the first scrub role in all major surgical specialties, including open heart and pediatric procedures.
Position Requirements:
Education:
+ H.S. Diploma or GED or Or Fifteen (15) years experience as an ORT.
+ Coursework/Training:
+ Graduate from Surgical Tech Program. Or Fifteen (15) years experience as an ORT.
+ Completes competencies in 2 Service Lines above.
+ Environmental orientation within 30 days of hire.
+ Unit Specific competency within 90 days of hire.
**Experience:** One (1) year experience as an ORT
**License/Certification:** Current BLS for Healthcare Provider.
