Public Works Maintenance Worker - City of Oakland, CA - Oakland, CA

The City of Oakland is currently recruiting to fill multiple Public Works Maintenance Worker vacancies in the Public Works Agency. Under general supervision from a Public Work Supervisor I, a Public Works Maintenance Worker performs a variety of maintenance duties in street and traffic maintenance and construction, sanitation and weed abatement; and performs related duties as assigned. Incumbents in this position may also receive technical direction from the Street Maintenance Leader, Concrete Finisher, Sign Maintenance Worker, Traffic Painter, Heavy Equipment Operator and/or Truck Driver.

The eligibility list established from this recruitment may be used to fill other vacancies that may occur within The City including full-time and permanent part-time positions.


Examples of Duties:
Perform maintenance, repair, construction and installation work of streets, parking lots, storm drains, and traffic control devices. Perform repaving, overlaying, pot hole and crack sealing of asphalt. Assist in the installation and maintenance of City signs, road markings, striping and delineators. Paint street lines and crosswalks. Construct and repair storm conduits, curbs, gutters and drainage facilities. Cut, spray and remove weeds; clear brush and debris from right-of-way. Clean storm drains, flood control facilities and inlets. Perform heavy manual labor. Write parking tickets. Operate a variety of power hand tools. Inspect tools and equipment for safety and mechanical defects. Remove signs and posters from public structure. Pick up litter and transport trash to dumps.
Minimum Requirements for Application:

Experience:


One year of experience in construction and maintenance work.


Knowledge of:
Practices, techniques and materials used in maintenance, and repair of streets, parking lots, storm drains and traffic control devices. Practice and procedure used in weed abatement. Safety requirements for operation of trucks and other equipment. Construction safety procedures. Ability to:
Perform maintenance, repair and installation of asphalt, signs, concrete and storm drains. Operate a variety of tools and equipment used in maintenance and construction. Operate hand and power tools competently and safely. Perform heavy manual labor. Observe safety principles and work in a safe manner. Follow written and oral directions. Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties License:
Incumbents in this position are expected to operate automotive vehicles in the performance of assigned duties. Due to assignments and hours worked, public transportation may not be an efficient method for traveling to required locations. Individuals appointed will be required to maintain a valid California Driver’s License while employed.

Supplemental Information:


The Selection Process


Stage I: The first stage in the selection process will consist of a review of each applicant's employment application and signed supplemental questionnaire for minimum qualifications (weighted pass/fail). Applications submitted without all required materials will not be given further consideration.


Stage II: The second stage will consist of subject matter experts evaluating and rating the completed supplemental questionnaires. Applicant responses to the supplemental questions must demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities listed in the qualifications section of this announcement. The evaluation of supplemental questions may be weighted pass/fail. If a sufficient number of quality application packets are received, the supplemental screening may be followed by a third stage and the most qualified applicants will be invited to the next stage. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee advancement to Stage III.


Stage III: The third stage may consist of a performance examination (weighted 100%) that will test the knowledge, skills and abilities listed in the qualifications section. The ranked eligible list may be developed directly from the supplemental screening OR the results of Stage III. Candidates must earn a scale score of 70 in this examination process to be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration.


The City of Oakland reserves the right to modify the selection process as necessary to conform to administrative or business necessity.
