This position is eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the program. Value of education award is $2,255.24 (pre-tax).
Educational Status:
Two years of related course work, work experience or a Bachelor’s degree in related field such as environmental studies, community/regional planning, recreation management, natural resource management, geography, geology or history.
Start Date:
As soon as possible, November 11th at the latest
Specific training:
Hands-on mentored work experience; individual training available to meet specific interests and needs.

Program Basics
This position will primarily be serving at the visitor center and throughout the park at key visitor use locations, and serve as the main point of contact for many visitors. The Steward will staff the visitor center front desk, where they will be responsible for providing accurate information about the park and surrounding area to visitors. They will also be responsible for relaying safety information to visitors and screening for White-nose syndrome.
The Steward will support the community by providing education programs to the local and regional school groups and creating and presenting interpretive programs to the visiting public. If there are community outreach events during the internship the intern will assist with those events by creating display and staffing information tables.
Goals of the position:
Provide education programs to pre-K through middle school aged students. Provide visitors with accurate information about the Lava Beds National Monument, the Tule Lake Unit and the surrounding area. Attend outreach events as a representative of the Environmental Stewards and the National Park Service Properly screen visitors for white-note syndrome and decontaminate items as needed. Maintain and report statistics related to the number of visitor contacts. Provide interpretive programs to the general public about park resources. Assist in updating and editing the park’s website and making social media posts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Staff the visitor center front desk for several hours at a time.Preferred Qualifications
Attention to detail, organized, and experience working in a team environment. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Self-starter. Ability to think critically and creatively. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to work effectively with a variety of people and collaborate with others (NPS staff and partners) toward a mutual goal. Completion of a Bachelor’s degree is required. Completion of a Master’s program in a related field is preferred. Positive attitude and sense of humor. Comfort working outside to gather park data information and inside at a desk. Experience working with school groups.Mandatory Requirements
Computer skills and ability to type. Ability to meet deadlines and communicate to supervisor when assistance is needed/desired. Maximum age is 30. Possession of a current valid driver’s license. Must be a US Citizen, National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the United States. Must have access to a vehicle during the internship, as the nearest place to get personal supplies is over an hour away.
