Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nationwide Non-Profit Conservation Corps based in Flagstaff, AZ and Salt Lake City, UT, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is seeking ONE Education Specialist Intern to dedicate 50 weeks in support at the Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge Complex providing quality customer service at the Visitor Center and assisting with the management of wildlife-dependent recreation and education opportunities.

Compensation: The ACE intern will receive a living allowance of $600/week for food and incidental expenses, paid bi-weekly.
Position Description:
The education specialist is responsible for interacting with youths and adults as a representative of the USFWS (FWS), facilitating the public's enjoyment and understanding of the Refuge and its natural resources. Examples of typical but not all inclusive duties include:
Visitor Center Operations (30%): Provides orientation, interpretative, and regulatory information relating to the hunting, fishing, interpretation, education, wildlife observation, and photography programs. Inventories and maintains stock of brochures, maps, Refuge flyers, exhibits, and education materials. Hunt Program Operations (20%): Operates Refuge hunter check station. Records data and provides hunters with information about hunting regulation and waterfowl identification. Drives passenger vehicles, light trucks, and 4 wheel drive vehicles to conduct program maintenance and performs construction as needed e.g., mends fences, posts boundary sign, minor water control structure and dike repair. Interpretation and Environmental Education (50%): Plan, develop, and present a variety of interpretative and environmental education activities on and off the refuge. Develops and provides quality outreach/in-reach services and products: drafts written materials including articles and correspondence to improve public understanding of the Service mission; works with supervisors to reply to comments on social media and create social media friendly outreach language; plans and participates in special events in the local and surrounding community.Qualifications: Applicants must have a minimum of or in progress of an undergraduate degree in Wildlife Resource Management, Wildlife Biology, Ecology, or Wilderness Management or other related discipline appropriate to the position. A combination of relevant education and appropriate experience is also acceptable. We are looking for determined, strong, and developing natural resource managers who are looking for experience working with land management agencies.
Required:
Must be a US Citizen and Permanent Resident Must be between the ages of 18 to 35 Must be open to varying and flexible schedules Must be able and willing to serve outdoors in varying weather conditions and participate in often strenuous physical labor Must be physically fit and have the ability to lift/carry up to 40-lbs Must have a valid driver's license and be 21+, provide documentation of a clean driving record, and have a personal vehicle (required) Must take all measures possible to ensure the safety of yourself and others and understand all safety precautions involved Strictly following supervisor's directions pertaining to materials, methods and tools to be used Must be able to pass a driver's test, read traffic signs and fill out trip tickets when driving government vehicles Ability and willingness to undergo a federal criminal background check is required Proficiency in English is requiredObligations:
Complete the training needed to perform the assigned duties safely and efficiently Provide own transportation to and from the workplace Volunteers are not authorized to operate private vehicles in the performance of duty for the Service If occupying the bunkhouse, abide by the rules and be willing to move out of bunkhouse apartment or room if asked by Refuge staff Report for work on time for dates stated above. Tour of duty varies between 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM and 4:00 AM to 12:30 PM Commitment to adhere to the FWS and California Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation regulations Follows the FWS and organizational guidelines This position will assist the with training of staff in the area of outreach and educationThe interns must be willing to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
